Kamala Harris will appear at the DC Ellipse to make her “closing argument to the American people”

On January 6, 2021, then-President Donald Trump held a rally on the Ellipse near the White House and urged his supporters to “fight like hell” before a mob violently stormed the U.S. Capitol. The tragic event resulted in several deaths and numerous arrests and convictions. The insurrection also occurred as Congress worked to certify Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election.

On Tuesday (October 29), a week before Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris will use the Ellipse to make what has been described as “her closing argument to the American people.” At a news conference announcing security plans, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said more than 52,000 people could be in the city. “Initially we were told there were about 20,000,” she told the media, before denying any “identifiable threats.”

According to Politico, Jen O’Malley Dillon, chairwoman of the vice president’s current re-election campaign, said the goal of Harris’ speech was to appeal to low propensity voters.

“We’re very focused on doing everything we can to reach voters who are still making a decision and making sure they hear directly from the vice president,” she explained. “So this speech is really meant to speak to those swing voters, those people who are making the decision to break through at a time when breaking through is sometimes difficult, and to really talk about what’s at stake in this election.”

Dillon continued: “We know a lot of these undecided voters are exhausted. “They’re certainly frustrated with the state of the partisanship and the divided political system that has really been defined under Donald Trump, its chaos, its lack of focus on real solutions to the problems that trouble the American people, and that’s why what we know tonight really matters.”
