Rush Fire Keeps Burning, Contained 48%

COMANCHE, Okla. (KSWO) – A fire outbreak at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is still being worked on to contain the fire.

The fire is currently 12,488 acres and only 48 percent contained.

On Monday, October 28, firefighters continued to move along Black Bear Springs to contain the fire.

The Meers and Mount Sheridan estates were in the north-eastern part of the fire, where firefighters continued to mop up any hot spots near the community.

Currently, 125 people, 26 vehicles, four bulldozers, three helicopters and three water tankers are involved in the firefighting effort.

Residents are not being evacuated at this time, but are asked to remain vigilant in the event of another fire emergency.

These roads are currently closed due to fire:

  • Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge
  • Reserve “Garden of Charon”
  • Medical Park Entrance to the shelter
  • Indiahoma Road south of Charon’s Garden Wilderness

Entry into these areas is prohibited by federal law, and anyone who enters may be fined, arrested, or both.

The restriction on drone flights is still in place because it makes it difficult for aircraft to fight the fire.

Comanche County currently has a fire ban in place, and anyone who violates it could face a fine, jail time, or both.
