Umahi Autumn: Ministry of Works completes 85% of over 330 road and bridge repairs

Nigeria’s Minister of Labor, David Umahi, said the Ministry of Works reported that the government has achieved more than 85% completion of the procurement and execution of 330 road palliatives and bridge repairs.

Umahi, who said a report on these achievements would be released soon, said this in response to Honorable Remi Oseni, Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), who at a recent press conference criticized Umahi saying the funds were not being distributed effectively for important road maintenance projects.

He said: “The President has paid special attention to the Ministry of Labor, and that is why in 2023 he approved an additional 300 billion to address a number of palliative measures. Next week we’re going to publish how much progress we’ve made on those 300 billion projects. We have used it to procure over 330 road and bridge repairs that were properly procured and completed properly. Today we have reached over 85% completion. And so when we publish this, I want him to go there if he can leave his supervision of FERMA and he can check these projects.”

Umahi also said that the Ministry of Labor “has terminated over 10 projects following due process. Some of them lasted 17, 18 years.”

The Minister of Labor said his ministry is working hard to improve Nigeria’s road infrastructure despite limited resources, stressing: “We have done very well in a number of our projects. Of course, there is no amount of resources that could fix 2,604 projects in four years.
