Klay Thompson makes history in his first week with the Mavericks

The Mavericks and Klay Thompson seem like a match made in heaven.

Just a week into his Mavericks career, Thompson is already rewriting the history books. The veteran sharpshooter made 15 threes in his first three games, tying the most long-range shots by a new team player.

Thompson hit four of his team’s 11 threes during Monday’s 110-102 win over the Jazz, less than 48 hours after hitting five of Dallas’ 13 threes against the Suns. In fact, he accounted for nearly 40 percent of the team’s long shots in the first week.

One of the biggest differences with Thompson in a Mavs uniform is that he no longer has to run through screens and flares like he did with the Warriors, looking for open shots. Since Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are master dribblers, their gravity creates a ton of space for Thompson to simply pick his spots and hit threes. This simple formula also helps keep his legs fresh, keeping him fresh in the fourth quarter.

After his 22-point debut against the Spurs last week, ESPN’s Chini Ogwumike did a great job of highlighting the rewards Thompson will reap in a Mavericks uniform.

“Six of eight were catch-and-shoot threes. This is not the Clay Warriors who had to run around and do so much,” Ogwumike said. “He’s the guy who just needs to spread the floor. That’s why when people said, “Oh, Dallas, is there a place you’ve decided to go to?” Clay knew exactly what he was thinking.”

If we go back to Thompson’s last game as a Warrior, a game-winning loss to the Kings on April 16, he only had two catch-and-shoot attempts out of 10 field goal attempts. He went 0-for-10, marking a very disappointing end to his Warriors career.

In Dallas’ form, however, it’s catch-and-shoot aplenty. The prospect of one of the greatest shooters in history getting that look and fitting into that ideal role is definitely scary for the rest of the NBA.
