MELBOURNE, Australia – A mother picking up her child crashed her car into a school fence in Melbourne on Tuesday, fatally injuring one child and seriously injuring four others, police said.

The 40-year-old mother had picked up her child from Auburn South Primary School and was turning around outside when she crashed into a fence and into an outdoor table where five children were sitting just after 2.30pm local time. time, Police Insp. Craig McAvoy said:

“This appears to be a tragic accident,” McAvoy told reporters.

The 11-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later died, police said in a statement.

Two girls, 11 years old, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The driver was detained at the scene and remained in custody, police said. Neither she nor her student passenger were injured.

Police questioned the mother but did not provide any further updates, McAvoy said. Specialist accident investigation detectives were at the scene collecting evidence.
