HomeBuilder triggered inflation and housing shortage

The $2.6 billion HomeBuilder stimulus during the pandemic fueled inflation and contributed to the housing shortage because much of the money was spent on renovations rather than building new homes, a COVID-19 investigation has found.

The inquiry recommended a more comprehensive review of economic policies enacted during the pandemic, including HomeBuilder, a $36 billion increase in cash flow for employers, $38 billion in early access to pension benefits and additional benefits for the unemployed.
