Schools damaged during severe thunderstorm in Mpumalanga

Ten of the affected schools are secondary schools where Year 12 students are currently sitting their National Senior Certificate (NSC) GCSE examinations.

Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga confirmed the department was on high alert but reported no disruption to the conduct of exams on Monday due to the effective use of public spaces as exam centers by district officials.

Meanwhile, Deputy Basic Education Minister Dr Regina Mhaule praised district officials who averted a crisis on Monday by defending entrance exams which went ahead as planned despite the damage.

“Some schools used junior classes which were not affected, but what we most appreciate is the kind gesture of our churches who offered their buildings to be used for examination purposes. We are truly grateful.”

The Deputy Minister urged community members to remain vigilant, report any damage, stay away from river crossings and monitor weather updates from the South African Meteorological Service for their safety.
