Car crashes into Australian school fence, injuring 5 children

MELBOURNE, Australia — A car crashed into a Melbourne school Tuesday, injuring five children, including one who was in critical condition, police said.

The car crashed into a fence at Auburn South Elementary School just after 2:30 p.m. local time, police said in a statement.

“One child was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and four others were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” the statement said.

The driver was arrested and will be questioned, police said, adding that the cause of the accident would be investigated.

According to Australia Broadcasting Corp, the injured children were sitting on a park bench, an unnamed Department of Education official said.

An Education Department spokesman declined to comment to The Associated Press.
