Despite defeat, the Spartan captain maintains faith

The Michigan State Spartans (4-4) fell short of a road win Saturday night over the in-state rival Michigan Wolverines (5-3) but produced a career-best performance from their captain, running back Nate Carter.

Like many Spartans, he believes this game should have gone a different way.

Carter spoke to the media after the loss and maintained faith and confidence that his group would move forward after their most devastating defeat of the season.

“I think more than ever we will be more focused and focused,” Carter. said. “We think we should have won this game and I think everyone in the locker room knows we probably should have won this game. There was no doubt in our minds before this game that we were supposed to win and there is no doubt in our minds.” that every game after this game is not a winning one. So, we’ve got to keep working, we’ve got to keep working, we’ve got to keep doing everything we can to finish every game with the W. to finish this season the way we want to.”

Despite the setback on the scoreboard, the Spartans ran the ball exceptionally well for the second week in a row. Carter was the star of the game against the Wolverines, leading the team in several offensive categories.

The junior quarterback caught two passes for 56 yards and rushed for 118 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Carter’s best performance in a Spartans jersey since transferring from UConn two seasons ago.

It was the second straight game the Spartans rushed for over 150 yards and completely dominated the ground against two talented backs. Carter shared his thoughts on the positives he can take from another successful night of football.

“It’s really encouraging and we see that we have a lot of potential,” Carter said. “We keep talking about it week after week and we will improve. We’re constantly improving, and that’s what Coach Smith always talks about, is making sure we look better every single day, every single week.” in the film and we say, “Okay, how can we improve, how can we improve in the running game, in the overall offense, in the passing game, how can we improve overall as a team?” So every day we need to work on continuous improvement so that we can win these close and tight games in the future.”

The Spartans will look to maintain a strong offense as they face one of the Big Ten’s best this Saturday against the Indiana Hoosiers (8-0). They will face the conference’s best run-stopping defense, allowing an average of 86.1 yards per game.
