Things to Do for Thanksgiving in the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WI) – The air is getting colder and hearts are getting warmer as Thanksgiving approaches.

Thanksgiving Day has been a national holiday in the United States since 1863. The holiday, held on the last Thursday in November, allows Americans to gather with loved ones to give thanks for the year’s blessings as we head into the winter season.

To celebrate the holiday, WIS News 10 has put together several community events to make your Thanksgiving a little brighter.

Tuesday, November 26

Stanley Law Group and Toliver’s Mane Event turkey giveaway

The Stanley Group is partnering with Toliver’s Mane Event barbershop on Tuesday to give away turkeys to those in need. One turkey will be awarded to each vehicle arriving, while supplies last.

The drawing will take place at the barbershop on N. Main Street in Columbia starting at 10 a.m.

Thursday, November 28 (Thanksgiving Day)

20th Annual Turkey Day 5K

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands are teaming up to host the 20th annual Thanksgiving 5K to celebrate the holiday.

The race begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at Colonial Life Arena and is a fundraiser for clubs that support local youth development programs.

Awards will be given to the winners of the race and the best dressed runner. Click here for more information.

Chappelle Memorial AME Church Community Outreach Dinner

To celebrate the holiday by helping those in need, Chappelle Memorial AME Church hosts its annual Thanksgiving dinner.

The dinner takes place at Chappelle Memorial on Pine Street in Columbia from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Radius Church

Radius Church is also hosting a community Thanksgiving dinner to provide hot meals to community members in need.

The dinner will be held at noon at Radius Church on Platte Springs Road in Lexington.

Harvest Hope Food Bank

The Palmetto State’s largest food bank continues to seek support to help hungry South Carolinians. Those who want to give back to this holiday can donate their time or donate food/money.

Friday, November 29 (Black Friday)

Shandon Türkiye Trot and Bern 5K 2024

Taking place the day after Thanksgiving, the Trot & Burn in Columbia’s Shandon neighborhood is sure to have you burning off some of the calories you got from Thanksgiving dinner.

The race will take place at 10 a.m. near Craft and Draft on Devine Street. Registration for the race costs $40, with proceeds going to the Shandon Borough Council, which provides improvements to the area. For more information click here.
