Why this discontinued car is a goldmine for South African car thieves

The iconic Nissan NP200 Bakkie has officially been discontinued and its popularity may now pose the biggest risk for its owners.

The affordable and versatile NP200, once a reliable workhorse for small businesses and individuals across South Africa, saw huge demand in its final month of production, with 2679 units sold, BusinessTech reports.

Priced from R245 300 and availability made it a staple on South African roads, but production has ceased. Spare parts are becoming increasingly scarce, making the situation ideal for car thieves.

Experts warn discontinued models such as the NP200 are joining other crime favorites such as the Toyota Hilux and VW Polo in fueling South Africa’s black market economy.

Car thefts were up 34% from pre-pandemic levels, with 66 incidents per day.

Reports have revealed that discontinued vehicles face increased risk as crime syndicates target them for spare parts.

A thriving underground market is hunting for the much-loved NP200, with owners now finding themselves vulnerable to taking over hot spots such as shopping malls and driveways.
