Apple plans major Siri update to compete with ChatGPT, Gemini: everything we know

Apple is set to revolutionize Siri with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, aiming to close the gap with rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, according to a Bloomberg report. The ambitious update, codenamed “LLM Siri”, will make the voice assistant smarter, more conversational and better equipped to handle complex queries. However, according to the portal, users will have to wait until 2026 for full implementation.

While Siri has received incremental updates in recent months, including a vibrant interface, improved understanding of Apple devices, and improved detection of pauses during speech, it still struggles to compete with sophisticated AI-powered tools market dominance. To fill this gap, Apple will temporarily integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into Siri starting in December of this year, signaling the assistant’s current limitations while the company develops its own larger language models.

The updated Siri, expected to officially debut in the spring of 2026, is expected to feature the latest artificial intelligence models designed to make it significantly more intuitive and responsive. Apple is reportedly testing the next-gen assistant internally, with a possible preview at the 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple’s cautious approach reflects its desire to create the perfect product, but it also means delays in introducing innovative features. While iOS 18.4, scheduled for release in spring 2024, will include minor improvements, many features originally planned for iOS 19 have now been delayed to accommodate Siri’s major update in 2026.

This phased rollout strategy ensures that Apple has enough time to improve its AI capabilities while delivering additional improvements to users. However, for those hungry for a smarter Siri, the real transformation is still two years away. Until then, the integration of ChatGPT and small updates are aimed at keeping the assistant relevant in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Apple’s move underscores its determination to reestablish Siri as a competitive force in the world of generative artificial intelligence as the company continues to improve and innovate its voice assistant in the future.
