Prime Minister welcomes first Budget to be delivered by a woman, teases £240m announcement

Sir Keir hailed Wednesday’s finance exercise as the first budget presented by a woman.

“Young women and girls all over the country will be watching,” he says.

“When Rachel Reeves stands up, she will make history.”

Moving on to what the details of the budget might look like, Sir Keir says the “doom loop” of the “low stature trap” will be ended.

The days of “austerity and chaos” are over, he adds.

He said Ms Reeves would announce £240 million in funding for local services to help people find work.

The Prime Minister goes on to say that he will crack down on government waste.

Budget will prevent ‘devastating austerity’

Sir Keir says the country needs to “be realistic” about the economic situation.

“This is not 1997, when the economy was decent but public services were on their knees,” he says.

“And this is not 2010, when public services were strong but public finances were weak.

“We have to deal with both sides of the coin.”

He says that’s why he never stuck to the previous government’s spending plans.

The Prime Minister says: “The Budget the Chancellor will deliver on Wednesday will prevent damaging austerity policies across our public services and prevent our public finances from going down a disastrous path.”
