Three die from bullet wounds as police deny using firearms and opposition leaders criticize Jama Masjid poll

Three people were killed and at least 20 policemen were injured during clashes in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday (November 24). Violence broke out near the Shahi Jama Mosque in Cote West when a court-ordered survey team arrived to inspect the mosque, officials said.

The deceased were identified as Naeem of Kot Kurvi, Bilal of Sarai Tareen and Nouman of Hayat Nagar, Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh said. “They died from bullet wounds received during the clashes,” Singh said.

After the autopsy, the bodies were returned to their families. He confirmed that the police personnel injured during the violence, including the SP Public Relations Officer, were treated at a local hospital. Authorities have detained 15 people, including two women, as the investigation continues.

The violence began when groups clashed near the mosque; There were reports of stone-throwing, arson and shooting. Singh mentioned that the three groups exchanged fire during the riots, but stressed that the police did not fire directly at civilians.

“Some police officers were also injured by bullet fragments,” he said, refuting claims that Naeem was killed by police firing. Sambhal S.P. Krishna Kumar Bishnoi explained, “The police used pellet guns rather than firearms. Autopsy reports confirmed gunshot wounds from a .315 caliber weapon.”

The clashes follow a second court-ordered survey of the mosque over claims that a temple previously stood on the site before it was demolished in the 16th century. The first survey was completed on November 19.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed, internet services have been suspended and schools have been closed in the area to maintain order. The incident drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders.

Congress spokesman Pawan Khera alleged a “well-planned conspiracy” and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav called for a Supreme Court probe, accusing the state government of orchestrating violence to distract from election issues.

In response, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak assured of a thorough investigation, saying, “No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.” Indian Express reported.

Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia added that security measures have been taken to prevent further escalation and that misuse of social media will be prosecuted.

Despite calls for calm, the situation in the region remains tense. Local leaders called for peace, saying those involved in the violence were not from the immediate area. As the situation evolves, officials remain focused on restoring stability and ensuring justice.
