Himachal Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Suhu on Saturday said the government is considering ranking colleges in the state and a formula is also being prepared for this.

Presiding over a program of the Government College Sanjauli Alumni Association, he said there were about 138 colleges in the state. He said: “We want to improve conditions in colleges and all other public educational institutions. The state government is focusing on providing quality education to students and there is no dearth of funds for this work.” He said that in two years, an arts building, a girls’ hostel and a parking lot would be built in the college complex. He also announced an allocation of Rs 50 lakh. lakh to the Alumni Association.

Many changes will be visible in the next budget, which will place special emphasis on the education sector. He said previous governments had plundered the resources of the state but the present government was making efforts to provide benefits to the people.

Reminiscing the old days, the Chief Minister said, “I will always remember my time in this college. My media adviser Naresh Chauhan fought against me in the college elections, but I won. All student organizations went on strike demanding the strengthening of the university,” he added.

He said that students of Sanjauli College used to make it to the merit list and many students took the PMT exam from this college. He said students should stay away from drugs and the state government was taking strict action against drug mafia.

Suhu said new courses will be launched to enable students to improve their skills and gain better employment and self-employment opportunities.

Justice Sandeep Sharma of the Himachal Pradesh High Court said it was nice to meet his old college friends. He said that the institute contributed significantly to charting a new direction for his career, for which he will always be indebted to the institute.
