A newly released CBS News poll shows that 59% of voters approve of President-elect Donald Trump’s handling of his second term in office.

The poll comes as scrutiny of Trump’s leadership and policies continues as voters express mixed feelings about the direction of the country and key policy priorities.

Voters’ optimism about the future

The CBS News/YouGov poll, conducted nationally with 2,232 U.S. adults between November 19 and 22, found that 50% of respondents believe America’s best days are ahead, 39% believe they are in the past, and 11% they say better days are happening now.

The poll highlights enthusiasm among Republican voters, many of whom express satisfaction with Trump’s Electoral College and victory in the popular vote. Among all respondents, 31% said they were glad Trump is back, 24% said they were satisfied, 23% said they were dissatisfied and 21% said they were dissatisfied.

Key Issues: Economy and Immigration

Throughout his campaign, Trump prioritized economic growth, controlling inflation and immigration reform. These issues were consistently ranked as the top concerns of voters. However, opinions on the state of the economy remain divided.

  • Economic forecast: While 31% of respondents described the economy as “fairly good” and 11% called it “very good”, 54% rated it as “fairly bad” (29%) or “very bad” (25%).
  • Product prices: When asked about the impact of a Trump presidency on food and grocery costs, 44% think prices will go down, 35% think they will go up, and 21% don’t expect any change.

On immigration, 57% of voters support starting Trump’s program to deport all illegal immigrants in the United States. The poll also shows strong support for various coercive methods:

  • 82% prefer to use immigration and border agencies,
  • 64% support federal law enforcement,
  • 40% favor military assistance.

Support for Trump’s cabinet picks

Trump’s Cabinet nominations received significant approval among Republican voters, despite opposition from Democrats. Key assignments include:

  • Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence: 71% of Trump voters supported him, while only 5% disapproved.
  • Pete Hegseth as Minister of Defense: 64% supported.
  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as director of health and social care: 80% supported.
  • Marco Rubio as Secretary of State: 75% approved.

Upcoming Challenges

Despite voters’ optimism about Trump’s return to the White House, the poll reflects ongoing concerns about economic woes and polarized immigration policies. Trump’s ability to address these challenges and deliver on his campaign promises will determine the success of his second term.

As Trump prepares to take office, his administration faces both strong support from his base and continued opposition from critics, setting the stage for a dynamic and closely watched term.
