BJP's Maha Conclusion for Delhi: Direct Cash Transfers to Women

New Delhi: After the BJP’s decisive victory in Maharashtra, the party is looking to adopt similar tactics in Delhi.
The BJP’s Delhi manifesto will introduce various welfare schemes and also plans to introduce direct cash transfer scheme for womensimilar to the successful initiative in Maharashtra, which is largely credited with the triumph of the Mahayuti alliance there.
In June 2023, the Mahayuti government launched the Ladki Behna Yojana, which provides monthly financial support to poor women. The scheme offers Rs 1,500 per month to eligible women aged 21-65 years with an annual family income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh. This scheme allows one unmarried woman from each household to participate.
A senior BJP official said their manifesto committee will come up with a direct cash transfer scheme specifically targeting women. He said that there may be some kind of limit, but it is still at the formation stage. He said Delhi’s strategy builds on their recent success and includes welfare schemes that have proven effective in the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The party is committed to implementing women-centric programs as a key election promise, he said.
The AAP government in its Budget 2024-25 has also proposed the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana’, which is awaiting implementation. Under this scheme, the government has allocated Rs 2,000 crore for women’s welfare.
It promises Rs 1,000 per month to Delhi voters above 18 years of age who do not pay taxes or receive other government benefits. However, this program is yet to see the light of day but AAP will push for its implementation ahead of the elections. AAP had won a whopping 67 (2015) and 62 seats (2020) in the last two state polls. However, the upcoming elections pose major hurdles as the BJP is focusing on issues such as cleaning up the Yamuna, road conditions and the allegedly costly renovation of the CM’s official residence on Flag Staff Road.
Another BJP functionary said the party is also working on employment, salary revision and scholarships for students. “Majority of people work in unorganized sectors and complain about lack of job security and minimum wage. Those working in the public sector also complain that there is no regularization of contract work.” He said the party would address all these issues in its pre-election statements as well as its manifesto.
