Should the Jaguars consider a shocking superstar trade?

Should the Jaguars consider a shocking superstar trade?

The Jacksonville Jaguars had one of the most interesting trade deadlines in the NFL.

Ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline, the Jaguars traded offensive tackle Cam Robinson and defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris, indicating that Jacksonville appears poised to go into full-sale mode.

However, on deadline day, the Jaguars didn’t do anything else.

They appeared to have reached a deal for wide receiver Christian Kirk, but Kirk’s season-ending collarbone injury got in the way kibosh on the deal that would send him to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What about edge rusher Travon Walker?

There was some guesses that Jacksonville could offer to move him midseason, although it doesn’t appear that the Jaguars ever seriously considered that possibility.

But is there anything that could make a difference for Jacksonville this offseason?

It’s definitely not beyond the realm of possibility.

Walker is set to enter the final year of his contract in 2025, and based on his performance since last year, he’ll likely get a pretty hefty contract as a free agent.

The former 2022 No. 1 overall pick had 10 sacks last season and has already tallied 7.5 sacks in 11 games this year.

There’s no doubt that Walker is developing into a prolific pass rusher, but with the Jaguars already inking a massive deal with fellow edge rusher Josh Hines-Allen, do they have enough money left in the cap room for Walker?

Jacksonville likely won’t be in the running next season, so keeping Walker for another season in hopes of making the playoffs in 2025 doesn’t make much sense.

Now, if the Jaguars truly feel they can keep Walker as a free agent, then go for it. He’s only 23 years old (he turns 24 next month) and he’s really good.

But when you consider that the chances of Jacksonville reuniting with Walker after next year seem pretty slim, the idea of trading him becomes more feasible.

There will be no shortage of potential suitors for Walker, who has played in 75 percent of the Jaguars’ defensive snaps this season. He’s not a passing specialist. In fact, one could argue that he actually better against running.

Jacksonville would be wise to at least gauge interest in Walker this spring.
