Ranbir Kapoor accepts criticism of Animal, mentions creativity and responsible cinema

Actor Ranbir Kapoor has responded to criticism surrounding the glorification of violence in his latest film Animal. He stressed the importance of social responsibility as an artist, but also mentioned that he wants to try different genres. The actor was performing at Raj Kapoor’s centenary celebrations at the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. When one of the participants mentioned that modern cinema today glorifies violence, which was not a trend in his grandfather’s time, Ranbir acknowledged the same and gave an explanation. He was also asked about the responsibility of artists, since cinema is known to influence society.

The 42-year-old actor said: “I completely agree with your opinion. As actors, it is our responsibility to create films that have a positive impact on society.” At the same time, he added that actors are also eager to delve into unexplored genres and characters.

“It’s important for me as an actor to experiment with different genres and characters and play different roles,” he shared, emphasizing how there is a need for balance in terms of creative freedom and responsible cinema.

Talking to veteran director Rahul Rawail on stage, he also admitted that he was toying with the idea of working on a biography of Raj Kapoor. “I’ve thought about this a lot. I spoke to many people about it, I spoke to different directors, Mr. Bhansali, I had my opinion on how to make a film on the life of Mr. Raj Kapoor,” Ranbir said. .

However, he further noted that the idea would be difficult to implement as it would require an honest portrayal of the ups and downs of his grandfather’s life, which his family might not like.

“You see, a biopic is not something where you just highlight the success factor or the highs in a person’s life, you really have to honestly portray someone’s life, showing their flaws, showing the difficulties and dynamics of relationships. Most of these things, I don’t know if my family will agree to show this side of Mr. Raj Kapoor, but I definitely think it will make a great film,” he explained.

To mark Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, Ranbir announced a special film festival on the same platform where the celebrated director’s restored films will be re-released across the country.
