Nirmala Police launches initiative to support students at RGUCT Basara | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Students of IIIT Basara now have the opportunity to directly share their problems with the police on a regular basis. On Saturday, celebrated as “World Adoption Day”, Nirmal police announced that they are hosting Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technology (RGUKT). This initiative allows students to have a dedicated police contact offering them ongoing support.
To kick off this initiative, Nirmal District MP Janaki Sharmila joined the students for a morning walk around the campus. In a more informal setting, students were also invited to have breakfast with the SP. As part of the initiative, the PI will visit campus once a month, stay overnight and have candid conversations with students.
The move comes in response to several incidents where students, facing academic or personal problems, have committed suicide. “Don’t lose heart and don’t despair. You should know that you can directly seek help from me or any police officer,” the SP told the students during the morning walk.
“Our intention is to prevent students from taking extreme steps. We want to give you confidence by assuring you that there is always someone who will listen and support you,” she added.
The police made it clear that this adoption was not just symbolic. They outlined a comprehensive plan for active engagement with students. For example, if a student’s grades drop by 10% from the previous term, police will contact both the student and their parents to offer support and advice, ensuring the student remains motivated to do better next time.
In addition, monthly sessions will be organized where students can interact with IAS, IPS and IRS officers, GRE toppers, MBA/IIM alumni, software industry experts and those who have studied abroad to inspire and motivate the students.
A special email address has also been created so students can contact the police directly. Students can contact SP, ASP, DSP, CI and SI to discuss any problem they may be facing. “Complaint boxes” will also be placed throughout the campus to help students confidentially report their concerns, which will then be addressed by the authorities.
SP Janaki Sharmila also discussed the initiative with Vice-Chancellor A Govardhan, emphasizing the police’s commitment to working closely with students, identifying those who may be experiencing emotional difficulties and providing necessary counseling to prevent them from resorting to drastic measures.
