Bill filed to allow off-farm sales of raw milk in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KAIT/KARK) – A bill filed Thursday at the state capitol would place some restrictions on the sale of raw milk in Arkansas.

House Bill 1048 would change state law to no longer prohibit off-farm sales of raw goat, sheep and whole milk, according to content partner KARK.

If the law passes, consumers will be able to buy milk from local markets rather than from the dairy farms that produce it.

Logan Duvall, owner of Me & McGee Market in North Little Rock, said he thinks the bill is a step in the right direction, but he would like to see more work done to lift the restrictions currently in place law of 2013.

UAMS internal medicine professor Dr. Robert Hopskins said he is concerned about raw milk.

“Unpasteurized cow’s milk is dangerous and should not be consumed by humans. Without pasteurization, it typically contains any number of viruses and bacteria that commonly cause human disease,” he said.

You can read more about the bill on the KARC website.
