CHICAGO (AP) — Will Howard passed for two touchdowns, Quinshawn Judkins threw for two 1-yard touchdowns and No. 2 Ohio State beat Northwestern 31-7 on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

Backed by fans at the Chicago Cubs’ stadium, the Buckeyes (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 2 CFP) overcame a slow start en route to their fourth straight win after a 32-31 loss. in Oregon, October 12. Next up is a showdown with No. 5 Indiana next weekend.

“Overall good. I wish we could have finished the fourth quarter better, but we did what we had to do in this game,” Ohio State coach Ryan Day said.

Howard was 15 of 24 for 247 yards. Both of his touchdown passes went to Carnell Tate, who grew up in Chicago and finished the game with four catches for 52 yards.

“They did some good things, did some things we didn’t see,” Howard said. “But I think I did a pretty good job of being able to make checkdowns when I needed to, not forcing things and just letting the game come to me. And when I can do that, good things happen.”

Ohio State star Jeremiah Smith had four 100-yard receptions, including a 68-yard play that set up Tate’s 8-yard touchdown early in the second half. The freshman nearly made a one-handed catch in the end zone on the Buckeyes’ first possession, but the ball touched the ground as he brought it in.

Northwestern (4-6, 2-5) lost for the third time in four games. Jack Lausch passed for 201 yards, ran for 44 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked four times. He also lost in the scrimmage, ending a promising first drive for the Wildcats.

“There (were) some things in the first half that gave us the opportunity to be in the game, to be in the position we wanted to be in,” Northwestern coach David Brown said. “And then some of the things that unfolded in the second quarter, midway through the eighth, you know, early in the third quarter, if you expect to be in the game against a team like Ohio State, that can’t happen.”

Judkins’ first touchdown capped an 85-yard run to tie the game at 7 midway through the second quarter.

On the ensuing possession, Northwestern went three-and-out and a high snap led to a blocked punt, putting Ohio State on top. Judkins scored again for his eighth rushing touchdown of the season.

The Buckeyes added another first-half touchdown on Tate’s 25-yard catch with 47 seconds left to make the score 21-7 at halftime.

Ohio State gained 118 of its 173 yards in the second half. Judkins finished with 15 carries for 76 yards, and TreVeyon Henderson gained 75 yards on 11 attempts.

“We made some adjustments and I think we finally got this game going,” Day said. “Some games take a while to start the game.”

Conclusion

Northwestern: Played without Teran Johnson, one of the team’s top guards, who was on the team’s pregame unavailable list. The Wildcats certainly missed out on the redshirt junior while trying to compete with Ohio State’s powerful group of receivers.

Ohio State: Once the Buckeyes’ offense started to get going in the second quarter, things went relatively smoothly.
