UP election results 2024: Can BJP bounce back from Lok Sabha failure? – India News

2024 Election Results by UP Polls: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made significant gains in the Uttar Pradesh polls, winning 5 of the 9 assembly seats, according to preliminary trends. This election fight is being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the BJP after the setbacks in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Key points of the competition
Mirapur: The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), an NDA ally, is witnessing the success of its candidate Mithilesh Pal leading against the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Sumbul Rana.

Kundarki: BJP’s Ramveer Singh Thakur is leading, dealing a blow to the SP, where Haji Rizwan is contesting.

Khair: BJP candidate Surendra Diler is ahead of SP’s Charu Kain by 1,738 votes.

Phulpur and Ghaziabad: The BJP retains its lead, strengthening its position in these constituencies.

Karhal: SP’s Tej Pratap Yadav, nephew of Akhilesh Yadav, is leading in the crucial race. This seat, vacated by Akhilesh Yadav after his Lok Sabha victory, has enormous symbolic significance.

Sisamov: SP candidate Naseem Solanki is leading, giving the party a glimmer of hope.
Ghaziabad: Despite the lowest voter turnout of 33.30%, the BJP is in the lead.

Performance of BSP and Other Parties

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) remains largely uncontested with its candidate Deepak Tiwari in third place in Mirapur. Smaller parties and independent candidates also struggled to make an impact in these by-election polls.

Influence on the BJP and Yogi Adityanath’s leadership
The by-poll results could be a potential turnaround for Yogi Adityanath and the BJP after their performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections where the BJP won 37 seats compared to 43 seats for the INDIA bloc. Of these, the SP won 37 seats and the Congress contested 6 seats. Early trends suggest that the BJP has managed to regain its strength in Uttar Pradesh, signaling its readiness for the upcoming election battles.

Exit poll forecasts and early trends
Exit polls predicted significant success for the BJP. The polls conducted by Martise and Dainik Bhaskar predicted that the NDA alliance would win 7 seats, while the JVC forecast suggested that the BJP might win 6 seats. Early trends are in line with these projections, with the BJP holding a comfortable lead in five constituencies and is expected to gain more votes as votes are counted.

Voter turnout and issues
Voter turnout in the by-election polls was 49.3%, indicating a moderate level of public participation. According to the Election Commission, Ghaziabad recorded the lowest turnout at 33.30%, while other districts recorded figures below 60%.

Highest turnout: Katehari – 56.69%.
Other turnouts were Kundarki (57.32%), Mirapur (57.02%), Khair (46.43%), Karhal (53.92%) and Sisamau (49.03%).

Low voter turnout could cast doubt on public enthusiasm and the impact of these results on broader state and national politics.

As vote counting continues, all eyes are on the final results, especially in key constituencies like Karhal and Kundarki. BJP leaders suggest the party is on the road to recovery in Uttar Pradesh while the Samajwadi Party remains resilient in its strongholds.

The results of these polls will not only determine the political dynamics in Uttar Pradesh but will also serve as a precursor to the 2025 assembly elections, shaping the strategies of both the BJP and the INDIA bloc in the state.
