How much money was spent in each IPL auction?

Over the years, teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have not shied away from investing hefty sums of money to acquire influential players and strengthen their teams. The total amount spent at each auction is interesting to look at as it highlights how popular the franchise league has grown over the years.

Ahead of the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organized an auction in which eight teams attempted to assemble strengths. The first ever IPL auction cost US$36.43 million. Meanwhile, in last year’s auction, the 10 participating teams spent a whopping amount of INR 230.45 crore.

Interestingly, Mitchell Starc made history in this auction when he went to Kolkata Knight Riders for a record amount of INR 24.75 crore.

The latest mega auction ahead of IPL 2022 set a record with teams spending the highest amount of money. It will be interesting to see if the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, ahead of the 18th edition of the league, can surpass the record set three years ago. The IPL 2025 mega auction will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25.

It is important to note that Punjab Kings will enter the mega auction with the largest remaining purse. They will have a staggering amount of INR 110.50 crore at their disposal. Meanwhile, first-ever champions Rajasthan Royals will have the lowest remaining purse at INR 41 crore. Fans are waiting with bated breath to see how their favorite teams will assemble their rosters during the two-day auction.

The overall salary cap now includes the auction purse, additional performance payments and match fees. For the 2024 season, the total wage cup does not include match fees, which have just been introduced. The franchise’s auction purse for IPL 2025 will be a whopping INR 120 crore.
