WBBL 2024/25, MR-W vs ST-W, 37th match, match report, 23 November 2024

Melbourne Renegades 137 to 1 (Matthews 60*, Molino 42*) win Sydney Thunder 133 (Molineux 4-23) by nine wickets

The Melbourne Renegades defeated the Sydney Thunder by nine wickets to take top spot in the WBBL standings.

Thunder were bowled out for 133 in 19.1 overs as Renegades spinner Sophie Molyneaux took 4 for 23 at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.

The Renegades then raced towards the target in 14.2 overs, with opener Hayley Matthews scoring an unbeaten 60 from 37 balls and Molineux producing a stunning all-round performance with an unbeaten 42 from 29 balls, with the pair adding an unbeaten 95.

Renegades moved 14 points clear of first place from Thunder (13 points). Brisbane Heat (12 points) will need a big win over the Sydney Sixers on Sunday in their final game of the regular season to move past the Renegades into the grand final.

The Perth Scorchers (nine points) sit in fourth place heading into their final game on Saturday night against the fifth-placed Hobart Hurricanes, who are likely to decide fourth place going into the final – unless the Sixers (sixth, eight points) will not be able to upset the Heat.

The Thunder struggled to gain momentum as the top batters failed to capitalize. Phoebe Litchfield scored 30, hitting six fours from her 17 balls, while No. 7 Sammy-Jo Johnson hit 21 from 19 balls.

Openers Georgia Fall, Chamari Atapattu and Georgia Adams scored 11 each as Thunder fell to 95 for 3 in the 12th over and lost their last seven wickets for 38 runs.

Molineux was superb, taking four wickets and hitting a dozen dot balls in four overs.
