Big day for Hair, Maher

Big day for Hair, Maher

Ozzie Hair was left to celebrate $1 million wins on both sides of the border on Saturday as Gringotts proved too strong in the Group 3 Mercury Gong at Kembla Grange.

Jumping just 20 minutes after stablemate and fellow galloper Heira Nadal won the Meteorite, Gringotts took $2.60 favoritism late and overcame a wide draw to add another impressive win to his resume.

Victorian galloper Superasi ($35) and Stephari ($7) took the places boldly, but jockey Tommy Berry confirmed his steed, on his ninth win from 17 starts, still had plenty left in the tank.

Berry admitted that the son of Pera Incanto has exceeded his initial expectations with his recent form.

“I think he’s better than I initially thought. For a horse to win (that race) with 60kg… he was kind of playing with them halfway,” he said.

“He spotted the horse (Suparasi) around the same time I did and turned on the afterburners and had something to give.

“He seems to be getting better as he prepares for it. You saw this final preparation when they were trying to make it to the Big Dance.

“Now they just let him talk… so I don’t know if I can take much credit. It’s very easy to ride.”
