How to Avoid Awkward Conversations This Holiday Season

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KY 3) – From football to politics, a holiday dinner can quickly turn into a family feud.

This time of year can be difficult. Whether you’re happy or sad about the election or the state of the world, someone else is feeling the exact opposite, and you may have to share a meal with them very soon.

Dr. Rebecca Freese is a licensed clinical social worker and assistant professor at Columbia College. She said many people are faced with a rollercoaster of emotions as they process the recent election and news headlines.

“At this point, no matter what’s going on outside, it’s time to take care of yourself,” Freese said.

If you’re stuck at a holiday dinner when an awkward or controversial topic comes up, Freese has a couple of tips.

Find a safe person first. Someone who has the same point of view as you or won’t judge you. Second, talk about something else, drowning out the unpleasant noise. If all else fails, take a few deep breaths.

“You can do (breathing exercises) while sitting; no one’s really looking at you, no one’s really thinking about what you’re doing,” Freese said.

Freese said it’s important to talk to a friend or trusted professional about how you can handle an awkward situation so you can stay cool once you’re there.

“If people take time for themselves and have a safe place to socialize, then maybe they can be prepared for what might happen,” Freese said.

If your emotions get the better of you, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can always get help by calling a mental health hotline. 988.
