John Lewis and Waitrose have announced they are looking to hire 12,500 people in their biggest ever recruitment drive over the Christmas period. John Lewis Partnership (JLP) has said it will be hiring staff at its John Lewis and Waitrose stores.

JLP has confirmed it will hire 4,100 more temporary staff than last year. The roles the company is hiring for will span the two brands and its distribution network in the lead-up to Black Friday, Christmas and the January shopping period.

Waitrose will be recruiting 7,700 seasonal roles across more than 300 stores across the country in the coming weeks. The positions on offer will include supermarket clerks, night shift workers and customer delivery drivers.

Recruitment is already underway for 2,000 temporary positions across 34 John Lewis stores. The retailer also said there were a “small number” of vacancies remaining after high levels of interest in the jobs.

The partnership is also hiring about 2,800 workers across its supply chain through agencies in roles such as warehouse workers and drivers as they cope with increased online demand. The company said it had already seen strong demand for Christmas in recent weeks, with Waitrose Christmas range volumes up 25% and decoration sales at John Lewis Christmas store up 20% year on year.

Charlotte Lock, customer director at JLP, said: “Whether you’re choosing the right headphones or looking for inspiring food ideas for entertaining, we know customers value the independent, trustworthy advice they receive from our partners, and also a friendly and personal approach.

“Our partners have always been at the heart of what sets us apart – we’re delighted with the interest the roles have already generated and that people want to be part of the excitement that surrounds our two brands at Christmas.”
