NSW Police say a fatal shooting in Sydney’s Surry Hills is linked to a nearby car fire.

NSW Police say a fatal shooting in Sydney’s Surry Hills is linked to a nearby car fire.

An investigation is ongoing after a man was fatally shot on an inner Sydney street on Friday night, with police saying a car set on fire nearby was involved in the incident.

Emergency crews rushed to Baptist Street, off Cleveland Street, in Surry Hills after reports of shots fired at about 7.45pm.

The man, believed to be about 30 years old, was treated at the scene by paramedics but died soon after.

Police established a crime scene by closing Cleveland Street between South Dowling and Elizabeth Streets in both directions.

Buses were diverted away from the area and people were advised to take alternative routes.

By 22:00 the street had not reopened.

In the nearby suburb of Kensington, Fire and Rescue New South Wales (FRNSW) were called to Kensington Road shortly before 8pm where they found a Porsche on fire.

FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said it took crews 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

“Initial investigations indicate that the two incidents are related,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Detectives from the South Sydney Police Department, with assistance from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, have commenced an investigation into the incident.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
