UEFA opens disciplinary proceedings after Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw was hit with an object from the stands

UEFA has opened a disciplinary case against Hammarby after Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw was hit by an object thrown from the stands during a Champions League game on Thursday night.

The incident occurred in the first half in Stockholm immediately after Shaw opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a rebound. The 27-year-old continued her celebrations in front of the home fans at the Tele2 Arena, where a record number of Swedish spectators were present for the women’s game.

Replays showed Shaw being flinched by what appeared to be an object. She was escorted away by City teammates before receiving a yellow card from referee Silvia Gasperotti.

A post on Women’s Champions League broadcaster DAZN’s social media platform said Shaw had “turned against” home fans over the celebrations.

Captain Alex Greenwood responded: “CORRECTION. Traveling to Stockholm will lead to a great goal. CELEBRATE your goal. THROWS OBJECTS AT HER. Receives a stick from the home fans. Receives a yellow card. Celebrate with your teammates. Qualified for the quarterfinals. What else are you going to do on Thursday?”

UEFA has confirmed it has opened proceedings against the Swedish side over a possible breach of the governing body’s disciplinary rules.

If Hammarby is found guilty, “throwing objects potentially endangering the physical integrity of others” could result in Hammarby being fined.

Ellen Wangerheim equalized for the hosts three minutes into the second half before Shaw scored her second goal to secure City’s place in the last eight.

“It’s a good feeling,” Shaw told the City website. “Today’s game was difficult, but we managed to get the job done.

“Today’s game was very difficult. Atmosphere and course – it was our first time playing on the astroturf so it took us a while to get going.

“Once we did that, we tried to implement what we know we’re good at. There are some things we could improve on, but at the end of the day, the most important thing is qualification, and that’s what we did.

“We have experience and quality in the team and we are used to this kind of atmosphere.”

City qualified for the knockout stages of the tournament with two games remaining, having beaten defending champions Barcelona earlier in the group stage.
