The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, one of the most prestigious bilateral series in red-ball cricket, kicked off in Perth today. Named after legendary captains Allan Border of Australia and Sunil Gavaskar of India, the series has become one of the most exciting cricket competitions on the international calendar since its inception in 1996-97.

The five-match series will play a crucial role in shaping the qualifying picture for the World Test Championship final. For India to qualify for the final (their third final in a row), which will be held at Lord’s next June, they must win at least four of the five upcoming Tests.

After a disappointing loss to New Zealand at home earlier this month, the Indian team will be looking to turn things around. Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team in the first Test as Rohit Sharma is on paternity leave. Shubman Gill, another opener, will also miss the first Test due to a thumb injury.

Australia and India have faced each other in 107 Test matches. Australia won 45 matches, India 32, one match ended in a draw and 29 were drawn. The last time the two teams met in the longest format was in June 2023 when Australia defeated India by 209 runs in the World Test Championship final.

While India have performed well in Test matches on Australian grounds in the last few years, their recent struggles against New Zealand suggest that they will have to step up their game against the Australians this time. Australia is currently at the top of the World Test Championship points table, followed by India in second place.

When and where to watch the series
