Oklahoma QB targets Kevin Sperry to Florida State

In the midst of the worst football season in a generation, Oklahoma just lost the cornerstone of its 2025 recruiting class.

According to numerous reports, the defender Kevin Sperry left OU and moved to Florida State.

Sperry was the Sooners’ first member of the 2025 class, promising Brent Venables And Jeff Lebby March 13, 2023.

Since then Sperry changed high school twicerunning from Rock Hill, Texas to Midwest City, Oklahoma to Denton, Texas.

Losing any commitment so close to National Signing Day (Dec. 3) hurts OU’s class. This is especially devastating because he is the Sooners’ quarterback of the future.

But perhaps worst of all, Sperry has been one of the most active recruiters in the class since he verbally committed to the Sooners.

Sperry has remained largely silent about his commitment to OU since Lebby left to take the head coaching job at Mississippi State, and he has also remained silent since Venables fired Lebby’s replacement. Seth Littrellafter just seven games.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Sperry is a four-star prospect according to the 247 Sports Composite. Sperry is ranked No. 47 nationally among quarterbacks and No. 131 in the state of Texas, according to 247 Sports.

Rivals ranks Sperry as a 4-star prospect, the No. 12 QB in the country, the No. 179 player nationally and the No. 22 player in Texas.

On3 ranks Sperry as a three-star prospect, the No. 448 overall player in the class, the No. 31 QB in the 2025 cycle and the No. 65 player in Texas.

This season, Sperry has thrown for more than 2,000 yards with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 8-3 Denton Guyer.

Sperry did not respond to interview requests, but he told the Sooners on SI Last year he was emotionally moved by watching his parents cry after Venables and Lebby offered him a scholarship.

“I think my parents felt the same way about it,” Sperry said. “My dad is not an emotional person. He’s pretty tough. But he was actually crying there when I went – I think it was camp. But he cried. My mother cried too. They just felt something special. And I also felt something special, so it all worked out.”

Sperry said he went to OU on his way home to Austin after a short visit with Norman.

“Kev was completely free,” his father, Kevin Sr., said. “It freed his mind. Throughout this entire process, his mind seemed to be clouded.

“He looked completely free when he said it. This was the best part. His whole body looked completely free, there was no burden on his shoulders. He was so happy. He’s still so happy. He’s just so happy. And as a parent, that’s all you want. You want your son to do the right thing and everything, and yeah, we’re just happy and grateful.”

Sperry joined the 2025 class before the Sooners had even committed to the 2024 class.

Of course, OU ended up landing a 2024 QB in Michael Hawkinswho started games this season as a true freshman.

OU also has a commitment from a 2026 quarterback. Jayden O’Neil from California. The 6-3, 200-pound O’Neal is a generally accepted 4-star prospect out of Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California. O’Neal is ranked No. 7 in the country according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. The 247 rankings have him as the No. 13 QB, No. 188 overall, and No. 23 in California, while Rivals ranks him as the No. 4 QB in the 2025 class, No. 54 overall and 10th in California. O’Neal is ranked as the No. 17 quarterback, No. 103 overall and No. 12 in California, according to On3.

O’Neal committed to OU on June 24, but then took an unofficial visit to Colorado last week because he reportedly wanted to watch Buffs QB Sheader Sanders play.

The Sooners are now 5-5 and face the possibility of a loss and no bowl game for the first time in 26 years. OU will try to move on as Venables has yet to hire a full-time coordinator and defensive backs coach to replace Littrell. The OU coaching staff has become close with Muskogee (OK) three-star Jamarin Ficklin, who is committed to Texas State. Ficklin also has offers from Utah and Army, among others, and recently visited OU.

FSU drafted a quarterback in 2025 before becoming a 4-star prospect. Trammell Jones retired last week and moved to Florida.
