With an estimated 18.5 million children out of school, the House of Representatives called on state governors to adopt at least five of the affected children as part of efforts to stop the menace.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Women’s Affairs Committee, Kafilat Ogbara, made the address on the fourth day of the National Children’s Leadership Conference organized by the African Children’s Leadership and Values Development Initiative (CALDEV), founded by Bamidele Salam.

The lawmaker noted that President Bola Tinubu truly cares about the youth of the country as evidenced by his announcement to organize a national conference for the youth.

She stressed the importance of empowering young people, adding that giving them the right to vote prepares them for a bright future.

Lamenting the alarming number of out-of-school children in the country, Ogbara said approximately 60 per cent of children are girls, representing 15 per cent of the total number of children in the world.

The lawmaker described the situation as an emergency requiring collective action by individuals, parents, politicians and government officials.

She suggested that if governors could adopt at least five out-of-school children, this would significantly reduce their numbers and reintegrate them into the education system.

Also speaking, the Country Director of Plan International Nigeria, Charles Uzi, stressed the need for young Nigerians, especially the participants, to transform the knowledge acquired in various schools into skills that will help solve human problems.

For his part, Abdulsamad Dasuki noted that the development of social networks has created a large gap between the older and younger generations of Nigerians.

In his remarks, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, who was represented by Hajia Nafisat Usman, described the participants as those who will shape the future of Nigeria.

However, he charged them to use social media positively for intellectual development.
