Eastern Iowa stamp collectors hope to attract more people to the hobby

HIAWHATHAH, Iowa (KCRG) – A nearly 100-year-old Cedar Rapids club collected more than ten thousand collectibles in Hiawatha on Sunday. In total, the collections amount to tens of thousands of dollars worth of postage stamps.

The Cedar Rapids Market Club held its biennial stamp exchange from Sunday until noon. This is a meeting specifically for stamp collectors and dealers.

The club’s president says stamp collecting was the biggest hobby in the country and would like to see more people take an interest in it again.

“People who are interested in history, this is a great historical thing. People who love art. Each stamp is a miniature work of art,” said Mike Taylor, president of the Cedar Rapids Market Club. “It would be great to get stamp collecting back on track because there is so much variety.”

One stamp dealer at the Sunday Exchange said she had seen a resurgence in the hobby since the pandemic.

“People started doing things they used to do, and one of them was stamp collecting,” said Christina Asaro, a stamp dealer from Mount Pleasant. “If you got on the show. it will help because you will see such a variety of things you can have and collect, and it’s a lot of fun.”

The club’s next show with exhibitions will take place in April.
