When Charity encouraged Cain to confront her, he admitted that he had done “something very stupid.”

“I still can’t believe I did it,” he said, although he changed his mind about coming out to his cousin and told her that he beat up Jimmy King instead.

During Moira’s operation, Jimmy confronted Cain about Belle’s accusations against Tom. Disappointed at sleeping with Ruby and angry at Jimmy for implying that Belle might be lying, Cain attacked him and left him with a black eye.

A shocked Charity berated Cain for his violence towards Jimmy, but he urged her not to “quarrel with Mackenzie” and hurried away.

While in hospital, Cain was brought in for questioning regarding the attack on Jimmy, but he refused to comment on the incident. He was released because he could not be charged, but the officer assured him that an investigation would be carried out.

Moira’s doctor later encouraged Cain to take care of his wife during her recovery, insisting how important it was for her to be in a supportive environment.

“I should never have left this room,” he then told Moira, crying.

On the way out, Cain ran into Caleb, who admitted to him that he had found a box of emergency contraception in the trash. The next morning, the pill actually belonged to Ruby, although Caleb was convinced it was their daughter Steph, who had just returned home with them.

Although relieved that Caleb didn’t suspect him and Ruby, Cain knew it was only a matter of time before they were exposed. He became frustrated with Ruby’s carelessness and threatened her not to play games with him.

“What happened should never have happened,” he said, and she agreed: “I still can’t believe what we did. I feel sick every time I think about it.”

Equally disappointed with Cain, Ruby reminded him that she may have cheated on her husband, but he did much worse by betraying Moira while she was in surgery.
