Pittsburgh Steelers QB Reveals Darnell Washington’s Real Weight

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have a dual threat when it comes to tight end with the addition of Darnell Washington in addition to Pat Freiermuth.

However, Washington’s stated weight is 264 pounds. According to several team members, including Russell Wilson, that weight has dropped slightly.

In a media release, Wilson cited Washington’s height when talking about his playmaking abilities.

“Darnell has such good physical attributes,” Wilson said. “In terms of him being 315 pounds, he can run, he can catch.”

Wilson also talked about Washington’s versatility as a big receiver and blocker.

“How versatile he is,” Wilson said. “I think about his ability to play on the field, his ability to catch the ball on the court and jump over people. His ability to be a key part of our run scheme, blocking and everything else. He has this endurance. He has that mentality.”

Wilson isn’t the only player to mention his weight has dropped, as fellow tight end Pat Freiermuth did in October. Freiermuth called Washington “huge” and said his playing weight was not what it was advertised to be.

During workouts at the 2023 NFL Combine, Washington weighed 272 pounds, allowing him to run a 4.64-pound 40-yard dash and outperform his peers. His play together earned him a third-round pick from the Steelers, who now use him in tandem with Pat Friermuth.

Washington has caught 14 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown this season. If he can continue to catch passes at a high rate, there’s no reason he can’t become a top player at the tight end position by the end of the season and beyond.
